southern Bowen Basin, and a tighter play in the northern Bowen Basin. Coal seam gas is also found along a broad fairway in the Walloon Coal Measures of the Surat Basin. Recent exploration for new targets has highlighted potential for tight gas in the deeper sections of the Bowen Basin, though further evaluation is required.

The Bowen Basin Geologist’s Group (BBGG) is a not-for-profit special interest group of the Geological Society of Australia’s (GSA) Coal Geology Group (CGG). The BBGG was formed for coal Geologists (and associated disciplines) to engage in topical discussions about the challenges and opportunities associated with our field in the industry.

Bowen Basin Coalfields Wikipedia

The Bowen Basin Coalfields contains the largest coal reserves in Australia. This major coal-producing region contains one of the world's largest deposits of bituminous coal. The Basin contains much of the known Permian coal resources in Queensland including virtually all of the known mineable prime coking coal. It was named for the Bowen River, itself named after Queensland's first Governor, Sir

The Bowen Basin is a part of a larger sedimentary basin system (Bowen, Gunnedah and Sydney basins; Figures 1a and 1b) that developed in the Permian and Triassic along the margin of eastern Australia. The Bowen Basin is generally oriented north‐south, and its early development has been attributed to back‐arc extensional tectonics in the Early Permian [ Korsch et al ., 2009a ].

Bowen Basin an overview ScienceDirect Topics

Bowen basin coal seams have been extensively drilled, with over 500 wells. Annual gas production from this basin is estimated at 100 BCF which is about 90% of total Australian CBM production. Vertical drilling and hydrofracking is unlikely to be very productive in the Bowen basin because of

The Geology of the Bowen and Galilee Basin Coalfields

The economically significant seams in the Bowen Basin fall into four age groups, two in the Lower Permian and two in the Upper Permian. Coal deposition in the Galilee Basin did not commence until late in the Lower Per- mi-an and persisted into the Upper Permian. The Lower Permian and early Upper Permian coalfields of...

Bowen Basin. Bowen is a major oil & gas and coal basin in Queensland, Australia. Over 100 hydrocarbon accumulations have been discovered in the Bowen Basin, of which about one third are producing fields. Accumulations occur throughout the succession, but the most important reservoirs are in the Early Permian and Middle Triassic.

No data are available for the Gunnedah Basin specifically, but maximum stress directions for the nearby Sydney Basin are mainly oriented north-northeast, north-east, and east-west. Compared to the Bowen Basin, stress directions in the Sydney Basin are more varied, suggesting that local features, such as density contrasts and structures, significantly influence stress orientations.
